is made from wild grass that grows
in abundance in the Terai ("moist
land") region of Nepal at the
base of Himalaya range. It is an
ecoregion that is a mosaic of tall
grasslands, savannas and evergreen
and deciduous forests. The grass-lands
are among the tallest in the world,
and are maintained by silt deposited
by the yearly monsoon floods. It
is also the home to the endangered
Indian rhinoceros, elephants, tigers,
bears, and other wild animals. |

hese grasses are hand harvested
annually by the communities of the
area. They benefit directly from
the trade by attaining education,
health care, and community development.
The raw materials are transported
to Kathmandu, where they undergo
eco-friendly curing processes to
increase durability. It is then
handwoven by women from Kathmandu
using indigenous weaving techniques
under fair trade principles.
